Comprehensive Low Vision Evaluations
The comprehensive Low Vision Evaluation is conducted by a Low Vision Specialist, an optometrist who is trained in the field of low vision. After a thorough review of the client's medical and vision histories, the Low Vision Specialist conducts an evaluation of the functionality of the client's vision. Devices such as magnifiers, bioptic spectacles, high powered reading glasses, telescopic lenses, glare control tinted glasses and technology equipment may be recommended. The optometrist then determines the need for other services in addition to training the client on the use of the device(s). Rehabilitation training, Orientation and Mobility, and Access Technology and computer training may be included. Certified instructors work with the clients based on an individualized plan.
Clients may want help in one or more areas of Vision Rehabilitation such as:
INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS
These are adaptive skills and techniques that enable clients to carry out their daily living activities. Instructors help clients identify their needs and set individual goals. Instructors provide training in:
• communication skills
• Braille
• personal care
• home management
• kitchen safety
• computer access technology
• job skills
• leisure activities
SAFE TRAVEL
(Orientation & Mobility)
We begin by evaluating each client's travel needs. After the evaluation, the instructor introduces a number of techniques and tools to enable the individual to safely travel in their chosen environment(s). Additionally, our instructors provide orientation to places such as the person's home, office, school, store, house of worship, etc.
